Electric car drives 623 miles (1,003km) on single charge
An electric car has driven a distance of 623.3 miles (1,003.184 km) without recharging. The Mira EV achieved the record at the course of a training school for auto racers in Shimotsuma, Ibaraki, Japan during May 22 to 23, 2010.
The Mira EV is a two-seater mini-van converted by the Japan Electric Vehicle Club, a Tokyo-based group of EV-enthusiasts, who replaced the engine and other parts of a Daihatsu Mira by a brushless DC synchronized motor, a battery pack, and other EV parts.
The battery pack in the Mira EV contains 8,320 Sanyo lithium-ion batteries of the cylindrical 18650-type normally used in laptops, providing a rating of 240.5V - 294Ah and a total capacity of approximately 50kWh (max. 74kWh).
The Japan Electric Vehicle Club had put together a team of 17 people who took turns at the wheel. The Mira EV can travel as fast as a gasoline-powered vehicle, but to achieve the record, the team drove car for 27.5 hours at an average speed of around 25 mph (40km/h).
